Indian boxer and Olympic medallist Lovlina Borgohain raised concerns after spotting a map of India at a Glasgow restaurant that omitted the country’s entire Northeast region.
The map was displayed at Mister Singh’s India, The Home of Curry, where the Indian boxing team had gathered for a dinner following its record breaking performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
The restaurant apologised after Borgohain raised the issue and assured the Indian contingent that the map would be corrected.
Borgohain Spots Northeast Omission During Team Dinner
Borgohain noticed that the Northeast was missing from a map of India displayed at the restaurant. According to the source, the same map also appeared on napkins used by the establishment and outside the premises near the entrance.
The Assam born boxer raised the issue with the restaurant management and subsequently recorded a video at the venue explaining why the omission was significant.
The concern was not limited to the Northeast. Members of the International Boxing Association accompanying the Indian contingent also pointed out that Jammu and Kashmir had been represented incorrectly on the map.
Borgohain asked the restaurant to take note of the issue and correct the representation.
Glasgow Restaurant Apologises, Promises to Correct Map
The restaurant acknowledged the error and apologised to the Indian contingent.
Ajay Singh, president of the Boxing Federation of India, said that he and Borgohain had raised the issue with the establishment. According to Singh, the restaurant accepted the mistake and assured the contingent that the map would be corrected.
The incident was therefore resolved at the venue with the restaurant committing to rectify the inaccurate depiction.

Why the Map Omission Was Significant for Borgohain
The incident carried particular significance for Borgohain because she is from Assam, one of the eight states that make up India’s Northeast.
The region comprises Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura. Its omission from a map depicting India meant that an entire region of the country was absent from the representation displayed at the restaurant.
For Borgohain, the issue also came against the backdrop of a major international sporting achievement by the Indian boxing team.
India won 10 boxing medals at the 2026 Commonwealth Games, including seven gold and three silver medals. The tally marked the country’s best ever boxing performance at the Commonwealth Games.
Borgohain herself won a silver medal at the Games.
Jammu and Kashmir Representation Also Questioned
The concerns raised at the restaurant also included the depiction of Jammu and Kashmir.
Members of the International Boxing Association accompanying the Indian team reportedly pointed out that the region had been represented incorrectly on the map.
The source notes that India’s position concerning the territorial status of Jammu and Kashmir, including Ladakh, is defined under Indian law.
It also distinguishes between maps produced within India and those displayed by establishments overseas. Within India, the source states that the Geospatial Data Regulation framework requires accurate depiction of the country’s boundaries in maps published domestically. That domestic requirement does not apply in the same manner to an establishment operating outside India.
Incident Comes After India’s Record Boxing Campaign
The map controversy unfolded immediately after India’s strongest boxing campaign at the Commonwealth Games.
The Indian boxing team finished the 2026 Glasgow Games with 10 medals, comprising seven gold and three silver medals. The result represented the country’s highest ever medal tally in boxing at the Commonwealth Games.
Borgohain’s silver medal formed part of that record haul. She had previously won a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics in 2020 in the welterweight category, becoming the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal.
Against that backdrop, the incident at the Glasgow restaurant brought attention to how India and its regions were being represented outside the country.
Restaurant Commits to Correcting the Representation
The restaurant’s apology and assurance to correct the map provided an immediate response to the concerns raised by Borgohain and members of the Indian contingent.
The episode nevertheless highlighted the importance attached to geographical representation, particularly when maps displayed overseas contain omissions or inaccuracies concerning Indian territory.
For Borgohain, the issue was especially relevant given her roots in Assam and her position as a member of the Indian team that had just completed its most successful Commonwealth Games boxing campaign.
